Public transport
Public transport in Prague is well organized. Trams are a fantastic means of transport for short distances and to see a lot of the city. For longer distances, you can take the metro, and for areas further away, there are buses. The good news is that you can use the same ticket for all these modes of transport.
Before I continue about the Public Transport, here is a warning: don't take a taxi in Prague, apart from Uber or Bolt. The chances of getting into a taxi driven by a scammer are high, and you will end up paying much more than a public transport ticket anyway.
Moreover, the public transport system is so efficient that taking a taxi is usually unnecessary. The city is not ideal for cars, and you’ll spend just as much time dealing with traffic.
Tickets for Public Transport
Where and how to get and what to do?
You can buy tickets for public transport at the airport, at every metro station, and at some tram stops. At the modern machines, you can pay contactlessly. At some older analog machines, you can only pay with exact change.
Tip 1:
Download the PID Litacka app (tickets can be paid for with a credit card). Instructions are available in English.
Tip 2:
The ticket is a valid travel document from the moment it is validated. So always validate your ticket before getting on the tram, metro, or bus! This way, you can avoid a hefty fine.
- Make sure to validate the ticket on the correct side
- Validate only once
- Activate a ticket via the PID Litacka app at least 1 minute before boarding.
Otherwise, your ticket will be immediately invalid.
Tip 3:
Purchase a day ticket or a 72-hour ticket if you're on a city trip (free access on the funicular at the Petrin Hill, otherwise it costs 60 Kč.
Tip 4:
A ticket is valid for the bus, metro, and tram. You can change transport within the timeframe of your ticket.
