Do's and Don'ts in Prague
When exploring the beautiful city of Prague, it’s important to be mindful of local customs and regulations to ensure a respectful and enjoyable experience. Here’s a handy guide to the do’s and don’ts to help you navigate the city like a local.
After countless visits to Prague, I've come to feel almost like a local. And like many locals, I’ve witnessed my fair share of what I call "stupid tourists" - those who are ignorant, lazy, and disrespectful, doing exactly what locals can’t stand.
Don’t be that person!
To help you make the most of your trip and avoid being part of the problem, here are a few essential do’s and don’ts that will help you experience the real Prague, with respect and appreciation for the city's culture and people.
Do's in Prague
Be a smart and respectful tourist, so...

Pay for Public Transport
Always buy a valid ticket before boarding trams, buses, or the metro. Ticket checks are frequent, and fines for travelling without a ticket can be steep.

Try Local Cuisine
Indulge in traditional Czech dishes like goulash, svíčková, and, of course, delicious pastries like koláče. Visiting local eateries will enhance your cultural experience.
So please skip Starbucks or Mc Donalds.

Have some cash on you
While many places accept cards, it's wise to carry some Czech koruna for small purchases, especially at local markets and smaller establishments.
Respect the Sites
When visiting historical sites and churches, dress modestly and speak quietly. When entering a church, take of your hat or any other headgear.
Take time to appreciate the beauty and significance of these locations.
Wake Up for the Sunrise
Start your day early to witness the breathtaking sunrise over Prague’s skyline. The early morning light casts a magical glow on the city’s historic architecture, creating a picturesque scene that’s worth the early wake-up.
Do a Lot of Walking
Explore Prague on foot to truly appreciate its charm. Stroll through the cobblestone streets, cross the iconic Charles Bridge, and wander through the picturesque Old Town Square. Walking allows you to discover hidden gems and local spots.
Be Active
Take advantage of Prague’s numerous parks and green spaces. Whether you’re jogging along the Vltava River, cycling through Stromovka Park, or hiking up to Prague Castle, staying active is a great way to experience the city.
Try Local Beers
Czech Republic is famous for its beer, so be sure to sample some local brews. Visit a traditional beer garden or brewery to experience the local culture and enjoy a refreshing pint of Pilsner.
Leave the Heineken, Bud, Carlsberg or Guinness for another time.
Learn Basic Czech Phrases
Locals appreciate it when visitors make an effort to speak their language. Simple greetings like “Dobrý den” (Good day) can go a long way.
Visit Lesser-Known Attractions
While the major sights are a must-see, don’t forget to explore lesser-known attractions. Places like Vyšehrad, Vinohrady, and Wallenstein gardens offer a unique perspective on the city away from the crowds.
Don'ts in Prague
Don't be a "stupid" tourist....so

Not done
Don’t Climb on Statues
Avoid climbing on the balustrades and (touching) the statues on Charles Bridge.
These monuments are historical treasures that deserve respect.

Almost any beggar on Charles Bridge is fake
Don’t Give Money to Fake Beggars
Be cautious of individuals asking for money, especially near tourist spots like Charles Bridge. Many may not be genuine, so it's better to donate to local charities instead.

Early in the morning there is enough space to do a shoot
Don't do a photoshoot when it is busy
Charles Bridge or any other sight isn’t your personal studio. Skip the lengthy photoshoot on busy times - take your picture and move on. Others are waiting to enjoy the same spot.
It’s not all about you; let’s keep it fair for everyone!
Don’t Eat Trdelník
While it may be tempting to try this popular pastry, many locals consider it a tourist trap.
Smell it, look at it and then instead, opt for authentic Czech pastries like koláče or vánočka.
Don’t Take Pictures with Animals
While you may see people posing with animals, such as owls, pigeons or snakes, it’s best to avoid this practice, as it can be harmful to the animals and it is often discouraged by locals.
Plus the owners of the animals can be quite pushy or aggressive if you don't pay (a lot).
Don't use your phone as a speaker
Be considerate: no one appreciates loud videos blaring from your phone in public spaces, especially in restaurants and public transport. If you want to share something, use earphones - it’s a small effort that keeps everyone around you happy. After all, your TikTok trends and Instagram highlights aren’t everyone’s playlist.

Love Locks destroy fences
Don’t Hang a Lovelocks
While it may be tempting to attach a lovelock to a bridge as a symbol of love, this practice is discouraged in Prague. It can cause damage to the historical structures and detracts from the city’s beauty. They will be cut off after one month, so it won't last.

Looks old, but is new and unsafe
Don’t Ride in Fake Oldtimers
While it may be tempting to hop into a vintage car for a really expensive tour, be aware that many so-called “oldtimers” are not actually vintage vehicles and may not meet safety regulations. Choose reputable services to ensure a safe and authentic experience.

Not done on Charles Bridge
Don’t ride bikes or Lime Scooters on the Pavement and Charles Bridge
Riding electric scooters on the pavement is illegal and can be dangerous for pedestrians. Stick to bike lanes or the road to ensure safety for everyone.
Don't ride any vehicle on Charles Bridge. It is too busy and you annoy a lot of people.
Don’t Engage in Public Drunkenness
While enjoying the vibrant nightlife, it’s important to drink responsibly. Excessive public drunkenness is frowned upon and can lead to negative interactions.
Don’t Make Noise (During Stag Parties)
If you’re celebrating with a group, keep the noise levels down. Loud, rowdy behaviour is disruptive and may attract unwelcome attention from locals and authorities.
Don’t Litter
Keep the city clean by disposing of trash in designated bins. Littering can result in fines and detracts from the city’s beauty.
By following these do's and don'ts, you’ll contribute to a positive atmosphere in Prague while fully enjoying all the city has to offer. Embrace the culture, respect local customs, and make unforgettable memories in this enchanting destination!
